HVAC Manufacturing - Battery Powered Rivet Tools
As tooling experts, we can offer customers technical support when choosing the correct installation equipment. Recently we were approached by a UK based ventilation solutions provider who manufactures products for the domestic, commercial and industrial construction sectors. They were looking for information on the PB2500SMART from STANLEY® Engineered Fastening.
The HVAC manufacturer was interested in the PB2500SMART as they had a safety-critical line application that they needed to monitor.
We arranged for one of our experts to attend a site visit at the manufacturer to fully understand their requirements and offer the right solutions. During the visit, it became evident that the HVAC manufacturer would benefit from the onboard process monitoring system that the PB2500 SMART offers for its safety-critical line. Its easy-to-use process monitoring system minimises defects and maximises productivity in industrial assembly. Capable of holding up to 500,000 pieces of data, the integrated touchscreen displays rivet counts, an OK/Not OK message after each rivet placement, and other live data. The PB2500 Smart® can install up to 1,100 steel open-end fasteners on a single charge.
Our expert also identified that noise pollution and trip hazards caused by the existing air tools were an issue as some applications required the operators to climb ladders. Our expert suggested that the company would benefit if they changed their installation equipment to battery from air.
Cordless battery operated rivet tools are increasing in popularity due to their capabilities and affordability and are used in a wide range of industrial applications. Their lightweight and portable designs offer an alternative solution to the traditional pneumatic air rivet tool.
“Cordless tools produce better working conditions than air-driven tools, from reduced noise production to improved air quality. Motor-driven tools are considered “cleaner” because they don’t generate oily by products like pneumatic systems”. Battery Vs Pneumatic Whitepaper - STANLEY® Engineered Fastening.
Advantages of battery:
-
Battery tools are lightweight and ergonomic: Their lightweight and ergonomic design make them very easy to operate and use over long periods.
-
Accessibility: The cordless design means the tool can be used to access hard to reach applications and can be used on top of a roof or in the middle of a field.
-
Inexpensive: No need to purchase or hire a costly air compressor, simply charge the battery and it’s ready to use
-
Battery tools use up to 13 times less energy consumption compared to air tools
The real cost of air:
-
Compressed air accounts for up to 10% of the total electricity use in many production facilities.
-
On average 30% of the compressed air leaks out before getting to the end-users.
-
Operators are losing money every minute that a compressor is running.
During the site visit, it was also evident that the HVAC manufacturer would benefit from switching from Pneumatic rivet nut guns to the NB08PT18, the first battery-powered blind rivet nut tool in the Stanley Engineered Fastening range. Ideal for the HVAC manufacturer, the NB08PT18- has a touch-operated screen that provides live rivet counts and other poka-yoke capabilities. Stroke and force settings are programmable, ensuring consistent, rapid, precise rivet placement. The NB08PT-18® features toolless quick-release nose equipment, enabling the same tool to mount multiple sizes of blind nut rivets with only a quick front-end change. Capable of installing 900 blind nut rivets on a single battery charge, the quick-slide battery installation means almost uninterrupted use between battery changes.
